OVERVIEW

Literacy Volunteers of Morris County (LVMC), a nonprofit organization established in 1987, provides free, individualized confidential tutoring to adult Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and those seeking to improve their ability to read and write or obtain their high school equivalency diploma. With more than 200 trained and supported volunteer tutors, LVMC currently serves 400 adults throughout Morris County, NJ through one-to-one tutoring, classes, and conversation groups. Tutoring is conducted both in person and remotely. LVMC believes that the ability to read, write, comprehend and speak English is essential for personal freedom and the sustainability of a democratic society. Our mission is to provide free instruction to Morris County adults in literacy, English fluency and American culture.

Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate leader to direct efforts that help adults build English language proficiency, workforce readiness, and life skills, empowering them to engage more fully with their community and improve their quality of life.  The ideal Executive Director is an energetic, visionary leader with the creativity and strategic acumen to guide the organization forward. This person is a confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills, a positive and enthusiastic attitude, and a collaborative leadership style. They should exercise excellent judgment and discretion when handling confidential or sensitive information, deliver exceptional service to those they serve, and approach challenges as a resourceful, solutions-oriented problem-solver. 

MAJOR Responsibilities

Fund Development:

  • Ensure the organization meets its financial goals and maintains sufficient funding to support program services

  • Identify and pursue new funding opportunities

  • Write and submit grant proposals

  • Report to funders as required

  • Ensure grant funds are expended in compliance with funder requirements

  • Plan and execute special events

  • Manage corporate and individual donor solicitations

  • Ensure all donors receive timely acknowledgment and appropriate recognition

Administration and Finance

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop an annual budget and provide regular financial reports for Board approval

  • Oversee all expenditures, maintain accurate financial records, and ensure timely filing of year-end federal and state tax returns and the corporation's annual report to the Secretary of State

  • Manage payroll operations, maintain accurate payroll records, and ensure proper payroll tax deposits and filings are made

  • Process accounts payable, maintain accurate financial records, and ensure all donations are deposited promptly

  • Ensure compliance with all legal, financial, and grant requirements

  • Purchase office supplies and technology, and maintain a safe and functional office environment

Board Governance and Support

  • Assist the Board of Directors in assessing organizational and board needs, recruiting and interviewing prospective board candidates, and onboarding and training new board members

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop the organization's vision, strategic plan, and annual goals, and monitor progress toward those goals

  • Provide the Board with timely information, materials, and documents to support informed decision-making and equip members to serve as effective ambassadors in the community

  • Attend Board meetings and perform additional related duties as assigned

Program Management

  • Supervise part-time staff of three (3) in managing program activities including recruitment, student interviews and assessments, volunteer training, tutor-student matching, and ongoing support for tutors and students to ensure annual program goals are met

  • Develop new initiatives to address the evolving needs of enrolled students and tutors, as well as prospective participants in the community

  • Supervise staff use of program databases, maintain required program records, and ensure timely submission of data and reports as required by grantors

Publicity and Community Outreach

  • Promote public awareness of LVMC to increase visibility and support recruitment of students, tutors, board members, and donors

  • Establish and nurture collaborative relationships with libraries, organizations, agencies, community leaders, and others to further the organization's mission

  • Manage the organization's website, social media, e-newsletter, and other communications

Qualifications

Minimum Required

  • Bachelor's degree

  • At least 2 years of experience as Executive Director of a nonprofit organization, or 5 years of experience in a leadership role within an organization

  • Genuine interest in promoting adult literacy and compassion for the challenges faced by adult learners

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, with strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to implement programs effectively

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software, and general internet use

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in adult education, literacy, ESOL, nonprofit management, or volunteer program coordination

  • Experience with social media platforms (e.g., Constant Contact, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn) and website management

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks or similar accounting software

This is a part-time (25-30/hour week) position offering a salary range of $65,000–$75,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
